According to preliminary forecasts of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the spring wheat planting area will be about 285 thsd ha, of which 247 thsd ha have already been planted as of mid-May, the press service of the ministry reported on May 17.

"The last time in Ukraine, during spring planting, similar planting areas with spring wheat were recorded 12 years ago. For example, in 2013, before the start of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of part of our territories, this figure was 160.2 thsd ha. In 2021, Ukrainian farmers planted 192.1 thsd ha with spring wheat," the ministry said.

At the same time, the ministry noted, despite the increased areas of spring wheat planting, their share is only 10% of the total area of production of this crop in Ukraine. Therefore, such an increase does not significantly compensate for the overall reduction of wheat planting areas in the current year.

"According to preliminary forecasts of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, this year's harvest of grains and pulses in Ukraine will amount to 45 mln tonnes, of which more than 16.5 mln tonnes will be wheat. The same indicator for the wheat harvest in Ukraine was set by the US Ministry of Agriculture in its first forecast for 2023/24 MY," the message summarizes.
