The export volumes of flaxseed from Ukraine in 2018/19 MY are the lowest for the last 5 years. In particular, in September-February Ukraine shipped only 6.2 thsd tonnes of oilseeds compared to 18-43 thsd tonnes in the same period for last 4 seasons.

According to the updated forecast of APK-Inform, by the end of 2018/19 MY the export of flaxseed from Ukraine is to reach 11 thds tonnes which is 52% lower year-on-year.

There are several reasons for the export decline, noted the oilseed market analyst at APK-Inform Agency, Julia Ivanitskaya. In particular, it is the decrease by half of the crop in 2018 in Ukraine to the minimum for 10 years, the increase of the competition on the global market on the part of Kazakhstan and Russia, and the absence of the main importer of linseed from Ukraine – Vietnam.

“Vietnam being the main importer of Ukrainian flaxseed for the last 6 seasons, in 2018/19 MY did not buy the oilseed at all. Moreover, this season the country also minimized the purchase of Russian flaxseed to 257 tonnes compared to 34 thsd thsd tonnes in September-February in 2017/18 MY” – added J. Ivanitskaya.
