In 2019, Ukraine to reduce the production of plant growing commodities — expert

According to recent forecasts, in the current year Ukraine will decrease the general production of plant growing commodities by 5.3% compared with the last year figures, declared the Director of the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics”, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS), Yuri Lupenko on May 14.

According to him, in the current year Ukraine will decrease the production of grains and pulses by 2.3% — to 68.4 mln tonnes. In particular, the production of spring grains will decrease to 37.5 mln tonnes (down 9.9%), mainly due to reduction of corn production by 11.8% — to 31.6 mln tonnes.

At the same time, in 2019 Ukraine will increase the production of winter grains by 9.1% — to 29.8 mln tonnes, including 26.2 mln tonnes of wheat (up 9.4%) and 3.2 mln tonnes of barley (up 11.1%).

Also, the production volumes of millet will reach 94.2 thsd tonnes (up 17.1%), oats — 424.9 thsd tonnes (up 1.5%), rice — 65.3 thsd tonnes (down 5.6%), and buckwheat — 122.4 thsd tonnes (down 10.6%).

As for oilseeds, in 2019 Ukraine will harvest 12.7 mln tonnes of sunflower seed, down 10.3% compared with 2018, and 3.9 mln tonnes of soybeans, down 12.2%. At the same time, the production of rapeseed will reach the level of 3.3 mln tonnes, up 20.4% compared with the last year figures.

In addition, sugar beet production will decrease by 7.9% — to 12.9 mln tonnes.
