Ukraine sizably cut flour import in H1 2021/22 MY

According to the State Customs Service, in July-December 2021/22 MY, Ukraine imported 2.4 thsd tonnes of wheat flour (down 66% y/y) at the sum of 1.3 mln USD (down 37% y/y).

Italy was the largest supplier of flour to Ukraine. It raised supplies by 30% y/y to 1.3 thsd tonnes. The share of Italian flour totaled 56% in the overall volume imported. The share of Belarus totaled 32%. Flour import from Belarus decreased by 87% y/y to 766.8 tonnes.

Ukraine cut import of durum flour by 55% to 51.1 tonnes in July-December 2021/22 MY. Usually, it is used for production of pasts that has been declining in Ukraine for the second season in a row. Ukraine produced 36.6 thsd tonnes of pasta in July-November 2019, 29.5 thsd tonnes in July-November 2020 and 27.1 thsd tonnes in July-November 2021.

Thus, Ukrainian producers of pasta have been showing weaker demand for expensive durum flour. Its average price increased by 65% y/y in July-December 2021/22 MY to 868 USD/t.
