Egypt imported 1.06 mln tonnes of wheat from Russia in March-May 2022, up 84% compared to the same period of 2021 (572.2 thsd tonnes), Reuters informed.

Bulk of Russian wheat was imported by private companies. Some Egyptian banks refused to facilitate payments to Russian entities because of Western sanctions but three traders said importers had made some purchases via suppliers in third countries including the UAE and Switzerland.

As a reminder, Ukraine and Russia are usually the largest supplier of wheat to Egypt. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 interrupted shipments of Ukrainian wheat as the ports of the country were blocked.
