At its meeting on June 23, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of candidate country for membership in the European Union. European Council President Charles Michel was the first to write about this on his Twitter page.

"There is an agreement. The European Council has just decided to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status. A historic moment", – he wrote.

This decision was later confirmed officially.

According to Olga Stefanishyna, Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, further preparation for membership will include the completion of a comprehensive transformation of all spheres, which will create conditions for the country to live by EU principles and laws aimed at protecting every citizen and business. This will create the conditions for bringing the standard of living, well-being and legal protection of Ukrainians closer to other EU countries. Ukraine will be constantly supported by the European Commission, providing the necessary advice and other assistance.

In addition, candidate status opens up opportunities for financial assistance for the transformation of society, the legal system and the economy on the path to EU membership, and will keep the country's European integration reforms a priority.

Particularly, Ukraine will have access to financial assistance for countries preparing to join the EU. Such assistance may be provided through grants, investments or as technical assistance. The candidacy also opens for Ukraine participation in EU programs and initiatives.
