According to National Oilseed Processors Association of Kazakhstan, sunflower seed production may reach 1.1 mln tonnes in 2022/23 MY under favorable weather conditions during harvesting campaign.

Preliminary estimation is made talking into account average monthly precipitation, planted area, average yield and monitoring data.

“However, this volume is not enough to cover domestic needs. Today, processing capacities of sunflower seed is about 3 mln tonnes. Thus, crushers will again face deficit of feedstock in 2022/23 MY, as the demand is 3 times higher than the supply. Imports from Russia can help us. However, industry ministries should take into account situation on the world market, for example, in Ukraine, who is the leading producer of sunflower seed and where risks to cut production amid war are very high. Additionally, drought in Europe resulted in downward revision of oilseeds production forecasts and cut the output of olive oil preliminary by 10-11%. Thus, for us it is necessary to minimize possible risks and make steps to limit export of oilseeds”, – Yadykar Ibragimov, Chairman of National Oilseed Processors Association of Kazakhstan.
