Russia exported 1.323 mln tonnes of wheat in the first ten days of September, down 28.3% y/y, Director of Russian Grain Union’s Analytical Department Elena Turina informed.

The shipments of barley decreased by 41% to 133.5 thsd tonnes, corn by 67% to 10 thsd tonnes.

She said that export had declined due to lower shipments to Turkey, which cut purchases by 440 thsd tonnes (72%). E. Turina pointed strong competition from Ukraine.

“Egypt is increasing import, and generally the export geography is widening. More than 53 thsd tonnes were shipped to Djibouti. Supplies to Pakistan, Tunisia, Algeria were stable. Algeria is replacing French wheat with Russian origin since the end of the last season”, – she said.

At the same time, there is no export to Central and Southern Africa.

“There are no shipments to Mozambique, while 52 thsd tonnes of wheat were delivered to the country last year. Last season, 70 thsd tonnes of wheat were exported to Nigeria and 40 thsd tonnes to Congo. There are no shipments to these countries this year. This is due to the more expensive logistics and the lack of fleet. Higher rates for passage through the Bosphorus has its influence as well”, – E. Turina said.

In the first ten days of September, Russia shipped grain to 16 countries compared to 24 countries the year ago. A number of exporting companies decreased from 64 to 19.
