Kazakhstan expanding export geography of sunflower oil, meal – Ibragimov

Kazakhstan is actively developing the segment of oilseeds and by-products that allows to expand the list of importing countries, Yadykar Ibragimov, the head of National Oilseed Processors Association said in his report at Fat-and-Oil Industry-2022 conference in Warsaw.

“In 2021/22 MY, sunflower oil production was growing sizably in Kazakhstan, mainly starting from January 2022. The highest monthly production was achieved in May – 33.1 thsd tonnes. The export of the oil started increasing as well, and amounted to 26.1 thsd tonnes in May. Kazakhstan exported 178 thsd tonnes of sunflower oil in 2021/22 MY, with the share of bottled oil at 31%”, – Y. Ibragimov said.

The number of importing countries increased as well. In 2018/19 MY, China, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan accounted for 90% share in the overall structure of sunflower oil export from Kazakhstan. In 2021/22 MY, Turley (9%), Afghanistan (9%), the EU (0.3%) were added to the list.

“In 2021/22 MY, the export of sunflower meal from Kazakhstan increased significantly to 158 thsd tonnes compared to 87 thsd tonnes last season. The demand from the EU was stronger. We estimated the share of Latvia at 10%, Denmark – 8%, Estonia – 2%”, – Y. Ibragimov pointed.

He added that Kazakhstan would export 278 thsd tonnes of sunflower oil and 268.8 thsd tonnes of sunflower meal in 2022/23 MY.
