The EU Commission introduced a ban on the import of four agricultural crops from Ukraine to the countries of Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia) — wheat, corn, as well as rapeseed and sunflowerseeds, for the period from May 2 to June 5, 2023. The corresponding decision was published on the website of the EU Commission on the evening of May 2.

As noted, "exceptional and temporary preventive measures" regarding the import of a limited number of goods from Ukraine are being introduced in accordance with the exceptional guarantees of the Regulation on autonomous trade measures.

"These measures are necessary given the exceptional circumstances of the serious bottlenecks in logistics faced by the five EU member states. They are aimed at eliminating bottlenecks in the logistics of these products in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia," the message reads.

At the same time, it is specified that the supply of these crops to other EU countries is not limited. They can also move in transit through the territory of five states where the ban is in effect.

"At the same time, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia undertook to cancel their unilateral measures on wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflowerseeds, as well as any other products coming from Ukraine," the EU Commission stressed.

"The Commission is ready to re-introduce preventive measures after the expiration of the current Regulation on autonomous trade measures on June 5, 2023, if the exceptional situation persists," the release states.
