By the end of August, drought was observed across about 50% of area designed for winter planting in Ukraine, informed the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

“In August, many oblasts of southeastern part of the country and locally central oblasts continued to suffer from air and soil drought. The effective rains were absent for 45-55 days over two months (July-August). This deteriorated the conditions and caused the untimely completion of vegetation of late crops, particularly corn and sunflower”, - was stated in the message.

The total amount of precipitation reached only 40-50% of the norm in most of those regions in July-August. In some parts of Kharkov, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odessa, Kiev and Vinnitsa oblasts it was historically low at 15-22% of the norm. The air temperature exceeded the norm by 2-3°С.

At the same time, the rains across western, northern and northeastern oblasts in the third ten-day period of August terminated long-lasting absence of precipitation.

“This improved the conditions for completion of vegetation of late crops, filled the upper soil layer with moisture and provided satisfactory conditions for soil preparation for winter planting as well as promoted sprouting and development of winter rapeseed planted in the second half of August or planting of the oilseed”, - the experts added.
