For January 1-15, Russia exported 1.6 mln tonnes of grain, which is 40% more than in the corresponding period last year, the Russian Grain Union reported, Interfax informs.

As Director of the Analytical Department of the RGU Elena Turina noted, the upward trend, which started in early 2023, continues.

“Wheat traditionally formed the main volumes – 88.5% or 1.4 mln tonnes, which is 48.5% more than in the first half of January 2022, when 945 thsd tonnes of wheat were shipped”, – she said.

Shipments of corn increased by 8% up to 145.7 thsd tonnes. E. Turina supposed that corn export from Russia grew on the worsening of world export and production prospects expected by the USDA.

“Therefore, there is some growth in demand for Russian corn”, – the expert noted.

She also said that, in the first half of January, Russian grain was shipped to 17 countries against 23 in the corresponding period last year. At the same time, almost all major importers increased their purchases. Thus, more than 300 thsd tonnes of wheat were delivered to Egypt, which is a one-third more than last year, 268 thsd tonnes were shipped to Turkey (up by 1.8 times).

“Such an increase in shipments to Turkey can be explained by the fact that this country has developed a program of assistance to African countries through the supply of flour made from Russian wheat”, – the expert explained.

According to RGU forecasts, Russian wheat export in January may amount to about 2.8 mln tonnes, which is 1.1 mln tonnes more than a year earlier (1.7 mln tonnes).

“This is the average volume for January over the past 5 years. The maximum was in January 2021, when exports amounted to 4.2 mln tonnes”, – said E. Turina.
