Seed material is an important component for the formation of a good harvest, even in difficult agro-climatic conditions. Ukraine, like the rest of the world, needs adaptive agricultural technologies and high-quality seeds to maintain its leading position on the world market under the pressure of global climatic changes. This requires a lot of investment. For example, a significant share of the seed stock of corn and sunflower is formed with imported seed in Ukraine. According to the official customs statistics data, the import of seeds of these two crops required 322 mln USD in 2020. And today we expect record production of both corn and sunflower.
At the same time, the production of seeds of foreign selection is actively developing in Ukraine. This allows not only to improve the overall quality of the seed fund, but also to form the export potential of seed products. In January-August 2021, Ukraine exported 6.5 thsd tonnes of corn and sunflower seeds for a total sum of 14.3 mln USD. Export earnings is up by 7.5% this year compared to the same period of 2020. However, in volume terms, it is still lower (7.7 thsd tonnes).
In general, Ukraine has a good potential for the development of seed production both for the domestic market and export. APK-Inform, the French National Federation of Maize and Sorghum Seed Production (F.N.P.S.M.S) and Seed Association of Ukraine once again gather the leading experts of seed market, farmers and participants of grain and oilseed markets to discuss the prospects for the industry within Seed Forum-2021.
