Ukraine: impact of weather conditions on the agricultural crop condition in the first ten days of December 2015

In the first ten days of December, Ukraine faced very warm conditions as for the beginning of winter. The air temperature significantly exceeded the standard climatic indicators, and was typical for mid-November period. On some days (mostly, on December 7), in the northern and western regions the daily air temperature exceeded the absolute maximum level.

The level of precipitations was much less compared with the standard, except for Kharkiv oblast and some raions of eastern oblasts, where precipitations reached 1-2.5 standards for 10-day period. The snow covering at fields was absent.

During 10-day period, there was observed a wide range of weather events in Ukraine: fogs, ice crust in some raions of northern and eastern oblasts, strong winds on some days, etc.

The level of sunshine duration to the soil surface varied within 3-40 hours, which exceeded the standard level for the reporting period by 10-20 hours.

The average air temperature in the southeastern part of the country exceeded the standard level by 1-3°C, but in the northwest - up 3.1-5.2°C, and varied within +1°C in eastern oblast and the north-east, and +3…4.5°C in western oblasts and extreme southern raions.

In the warmest days the maximum air temperature reached +8…12°C, in Lviv and Odessa oblasts - +13…14°C.

In the coolest nights the minimum air temperature decreased to -1…-6°C, but in eastern oblasts, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhye and Odessa oblasts - -7…-10°C.

At night the soil surface temperature decreased to -3…-8°. In the daytime the soil surface temperature increased to +10…18°.

During 1-5 days, Ukraine faced precipitations of varying intensity in form of rain and sleet. In the major territory of the country the precipitation level totaled 40-70% (6-12 mm). In Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava oblasts the average index varied within the ten-day standard (12-17 mm), in Kharkiv oblast – 167% of the standard (25 mm). But in Chernihiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Odessa, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts the average index did not exceed 5 mm.

At the same time, the daily maximum precipitations in Kharkiv oblast and some raions of Zakarpattia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts reached 14-30 mm, or 1-2.4 of the ten-day period.

As of December 10, snow covering at fields was completely absent.

At the end of 10-day period, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Poltava, most parts of Kirovohrad, Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa oblasts, and some raions of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast faced low-scale soil freezing to 1-7 cm, in some raions on Kharkiv oblast - 8-12 cm.

The relative humidity of the air varied within the range of 80-92%.

Winter crops in most oblasts were in condition of deep winter dormancy. On some days when the air temperature grew over +5C°, winter crops showed some low-scale development processes.

In southern and western oblasts winter crops areas showed more active vegetation processes, supported by rather high air temperatures as for December. The share of fields with winter crops in poor condition somewhat decreased.
